Let's start with disclaimers: watching previous entries in the Gundam Universal Century is optional, but it is a highly advisable option if you want to get the most out of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. You will be able to follow the story, but scenes will definitely be lost on you.

What would your 'ideal anime' look like? For me the question is not just fantasy. Imagine an anniversary project by a powerhouse studio, with Movie class budget, TV show class runtime, Hiroyuki Sawano on the OST, rebooting a generation defining epic from the golden age of animation, but repackaged for a new modern demographic. Today I want to introduce you to Gundam Unicorn, a 7 part movie/OVA series, and dream come true that I hope you too can soon join me in enjoying.
The full power of one of anime's strongest powerhouses
To start things off I want to show you a few clips.
Do take note, these are all clips from the first movie in a 5-year project. Each subsequent movie boasts improved and smoother visuals all round.
So how did they accomplish this?
The effort put behind Unicorn is something to marvel at. First off, no cost was spared to make the work as close to the creator's vision as possible. To remove the budget and time limits of a TV series, the project was given a runtime of seven 1-hour long OVAs/Movies to be released over the span of around 5 years. To call the production schedule generous would be an understatement. If Unlimited Budget Works were to apply to anything, it should apply here.
Sunrise Studio 1, the flagship studio that has developed most of the resource heavy of Gundam shows, headed the project. But this only really tells half the tale. Take a look at the staff/studio listing on Anime News Network. Your favorite studio probably had a hand in making this look great. /r/anime's recent fave Studio Bones? Classic Sunrise ally, they did the in between check for every OVA, and are listed prominently in the credits. IG, Khara, Satelight, etc? All there. How about Studio Ghibli? Co-producer for movie 3. Some of these OVAs have ending credits that are 6 minutes long and the passion of everyone involved really shows.
That Soundtrack
Just as impressive as the visuals is the soundtrack that matches. If you've seen the clips I've linked above, you can probably tell who created the soundtrack: Hiroyuki Sawano. The man is famous for having composed fantastic works for Attack on Titan, Aldnoah.Zero, and Kill la Kill among others, but this composition is by far my favorite. Famous tracks such as the Unicorn main theme, Gundam, and 20140517 are just as iconic as the animation and characters in defining the scenes they appear in
Of course, another marketable pull for this series is its 7 unique ED songs. The songs are some great fan favorites, and you may have heard a few in popular anime music compilations online. Here are a few of my favorites:
A fantastic narrative 40 years in the making
Of course no amount of flashy visuals or sensual audio can shine without the core story, which may very well be Gundam Unicorn’s most ambitious aspect. You see, Unicorn is simultaneously a sequel to past great Gundam works as well as a perfectly standalone series that welcomes newcomers to the franchise. You don’t need to be a Gundam fan in order to enjoy this series. I’ll explain more of this in Part 3 but for now let’s take a look at how the story is presented
Part 2: Unicorn's own Story
Gundam Unicorn actually stacks multiple important storylines that each could deserve their own anime. It would have been fine just to have a single fantastic narrative to love, but having four or five different ones, all top tier, make for a spectacular experience that changes bit by bit to offer different perspectives from initial watch to rewatch.
A Generational struggle of politics
The main narrative of Unicorn follows the story of The Vist family. They have for 96 years of the first Universal Century held immense political and financial power by leveraging secrets of the Earth Federation mysteriously referred to as Laplace's Box. As the turn of the century approaches, the Federation attempt to assassinate the family's head to regain control of the Box. Mr. Vist escapes, barely alive, and manages to locate his 16-year-old son Banagher and bestow the Unicorn Gundam as 'The key to the Box' onto him as a dying wish.
Banagher, as the only pilot the Unicorn recognizes, must discover the role his family played in establishing the Universal Century and the consequences that holds in the current war torn political landscape, as well as how Laplace's Box may drastically change the outcome of the second Universal Century just around the corner.
Gundam Unicorn Ost 4
There are good people fighting for both sides
On one side we have the Earth Federation, the single largest power that controls the entire earth sphere and claims rule over all of humanity. They seek to destroy the Laplace’s Box as they predict it contains a power that could overthrow their absolute rule. On the other side we have the Neo Zeon forces, the third uprising of space colony dwellers who seek independence from the Federation using the power the Box could provide.
A morally gray war story is common in anime, often with the emphasis that both sides in a conflict are capable of doing terrible things. Unicorn, and Gundam as a whole, does this part as well, but also provides equal focus on the opposite approach, showing thoroughly good people on both sides of a conflict. These good people, led by good intentions, still end up in opposing sides of the conflict due to the unbridgeable gap formed by a history of war. As the Unicorn and Banagher fall into situations placing them on both sides of the war, we see these people helping him mature. The tragedy arises when we see these different groups of characters we have come to love fighting and killing each other.

With the newly ignited struggle between the Neo-Zeon forces and the Federation over the ownership of Laplace's box many battles flare up throughout the story. However, the Laplace struggle is but a convenient excuse and the real conflict arose from a generations long hatred brewing from the beginning of the Universal Century. This is a surprisingly fitting metaphor of the cultural and racial struggles and wars going on in our world right now. It is not necessarily a question of one side being justified and the other unreasonable, but an inevitable conflict that cannot be stopped and will probably arise in the future again.
The endless cycle of hatred and emotion
An important theme in Unicorn is how ace pilots can easily become swallowed in the heat of battle, developing an almost blind bloodlust as the power of the machine coaxes the controller to exhibit as much destruction as possible. Part of this is overemphasized with technologies that artificially boost emotions, but the core issue remains a thoroughly relatable and real one. The extra exploits egged on through adrenaline are what paint the soldiers as ruthless devils to the opposition and nearby civilians, causing the hatred to ever increase and keep brewing until they force through with an overpowered revenge.
Long anime can be scary, but I assure you that with UC Gundam there is nothing to be worried about. If this writeup has convinced you to crave Unicorn directly you can dive in straight and have a great time. And if you feel the need to watch all the predecessor works first to get the full context, that too should be nice and fun, not some scary and grueling journey some may fear.
The argument for diving straight in
![]()
At its core, Gundam Unicorn is undeniably standalone. The base story, the generational struggle I mentioned, is freshly introduced in Unicorn. It's new for both first time fans and Gundam veterans. The war and political struggles are universal things that can be understood as just that, a war story. With all of that to pay attention to, you should be well busied without the need to search for other Gundam references.
It's also important to consider the framing of this story. The main character, Banagher, is a 16-year-old boy who has lived his entire life in peace. He is being thrown into this war as a civilian who does not understand the politics, mechanical specs, or other details. In fact, being a Gundam newbie could even allow you to relate to him more as you get confused at the moments where he is also lost and get shocked at revelations that would have been hinted at with traditional tropes that you are not aware of yet. And in the background, you can be secure in the knowledge that all these details are consistent and make sense, waiting for you to find them upon a rewatch.
The argument for watching other works first
There are still good reasons to hold off watching Unicorn until you've experienced other Gundams. An often stated one is that in many respects Unicorn loves to delve into pure fanservice with references to older entries all over the place. Seeing all of this in context really is special. The enjoyment you can get from feeling 30 years of history brought to you in snippets all throughout the movies truly is a special treat reserved only for the loyal previous fans.
But to me the more important argument is this: Old Gundam is really really good. You see, large franchises can be daunting since there is a lot of stuff you 'need to get through' to get to the treasure that lies in the end. Gundam doesn't have this issue since the entire journey from beginning to end already is the good stuff. The 1979 original Mobile suit Gundam? It's dated, sure. It's got some flaws. But to this day it itself is honored as a legend, not for what it spawned later, but for its own gritty and humanizing tale of a war between two sides in a grey war. Amuro Ray, the Gundam, the Zaku, Char Aznable, are all cultural mainstays in Japanese culture. It's sequel, Zeta Gundam, is probably the most popular of all UC anime. I'm here to shill Unicorn since it’s my personal favorite, but many of my friends still point to Zeta saying that it has the most charm and that it is the crown jewel worth celebrating. And the final Char's Counterattack movie? One of the most beautiful creations out there and quite possibly the pinnacle of Sunrise's animation in the golden age of animation in the 80s.
Many times, fans will call out for a sequel to a great single or double cour season that airs. Think of Gundam like that. A series of great seasons that can be enjoyed a dozen episodes at a time at whatever pace you wish. The quality will start high and as of Unicorn will 'end' high as well, with more than plenty to enjoy in between. A lot of good anime to watch is a privilege not a chore.

If you choose this path the watch order is as follows: Mobile Suit Gundam (43 eps TV) -> Zeta Gundam (50 eps TV) -> ZZ Gundam (47 eps TV) -> Char's Counterattack (movie) -> UNICORN
My personal thoughts. TL; DR
I want to spare a few moments to talk about what Gundam Unicorn means to me personally. I grew up with Gundam. As a child I was shown 0079 and Zeta instead of cartoons loving the giant robot designs and the cool fights. In my mid-teens I revisited them and found a deeper story to enjoy with a fascination with the characters like Kamille and Char, watching ZZ and CCA too since I couldn't get enough. And just last year I discovered Unicorn, the ending to this journey, a passing on of a generation in the story just as I pass on from childhood to adulthood.
Is Gundam Unicorn the pinnacle of anime? From what I have seen, yes. As of 2018 it is still undoubtedly the pinnacle of Universal Century Gundam, a story more epic than anything I've experienced. It has the animation and tight narration that surpasses any TV show, yet the long runtime to carefully flesh out a story in a way a single movie could never do. Most importantly, it has a lasting impact that has me coming back repeatedly in a way that no other franchise has, even as I discover more and more great works thanks to my friends and users on this sub. With around 200 completed entries, I am not the most prolific of anime watchers out there but not a complete newbie by any shot either.
There really isn't much higher praise I can give, so I'll call it quits at there. I hope I've convinced you to give it a shot. Hey, at the very worst you'll still get a hype action movie with impressive fighting robots. But maybe, just maybe, you'll find a new favorite just like I did.
